After six episodes of buildup, the Argonaut origin story arrives in flashback — rendered in a deliberately different, almost storybook visual register that sets the hour apart from the rest of the season (a shift outlets like TV Tropes and Vulture singled out).
We meet Pamela before the lake: a young singer who falls for Elias, marries him, and gives birth to Jason. What should be a joyous story curdles — the marriage sours, Elias's work and world close in, and baby Jason begins showing symptoms no doctor can neatly explain: the headaches, the seizures, the skull.
The experiments that haunt the season's margins are finally shown: Argonaut is not a metaphor, and what was done to Jason as a small child is the engine of everything — his painlessness, his growth, his refusal to die.
